Cold rolling takes place after the material has been hot rolled. This process is implemented once the hot rolled material is cooled and brought to room temperature. The steel will be rolled again, possibly multiple times, at room temperature to improve the steel’s surface smoothness, strength, gauge accuracy and finish. Cold rolled steel comes in several different finishes, inquire with one of our sales reps to get more information.
Hot rolling is a mill process that involves rolling the steel at a high temperature, typically around 1700 degrees Fahrenheit, which is above the steel’s recrystallization temperature. This application of heat allows for the steel to be shaped and formed more easily. Hot rolled finishes are a mill finish, annealed and/or passivated, and no other finish applications will be applied to the material.
